Your Morning Fix
- US equities closed slightly lower after 8 days of consecutive gains as some investors took profit ahead of the release of the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s July meeting tonight. The US dollar continued to weaken on expectations that the Fed will hint at monetary easing, with markets split between a 25- or 50-basis-point (bp) rate cut in September.
- US Treasury yields decreased following a spillover from a rally in Canada’s bond market after the Canadian consumer price index (CPI) eased to 2.5% year-on-year in July from 2.7% in June.
- The Japanese yen (JPY) appreciated by 0.90% to 145.25, firmly trading below 146.00, in anticipation of Bank of Japan (BOJ) Governor Kazuo Ueda’s speech to parliament on August 23. A break below 145.20 will likely set the play for 144.00
- Meralco will proceed with the bidding for its 1,000-MW power supply requirement after the dismissal of an injunction petition.
- The Philippine government successfully raised PHP 25 billion from the reissuance of 20-year Treasury bonds, attracting PHP 54.601 billion in bids and recording a decline in the average rate to 6.103%.>
